Outside-In Flow

  • Solids remain on the outer surface of the membrane fibers
  • Easier and less frequent cleaning
  • Allows higher solids loading and uniform flow distribution
  • More tolerant to particulate fouling
  • Effective foulant removal during backwash with air scouring and CIP
  • Reduces risk of irreversible fiber choking during feed water fluctuations

Inside-Out Flow

  • Requires fine prescreening to prevent solids from entering the fiber lumen
  • Cleaning is more aggressive and more frequent
  • Higher solids loading may cause fiber blockage
  • Less tolerant to particulate fouling
  • Aggressive CEBs and CIPs may be required for foulant removal
  • Higher likelihood of fouling over long-term operation
